When I came home from work the other day, I looked outside my window to see an unexpected visitor in my bird feeder. The poor thing looked a bit afraid, like maybe I was going to tell him to leave, but seeing him there just made me smile. The food I set out in my feeder is for birds, but that doesn’t mean other creatures aren’t welcome to it too.
I had a conversation recently with the lady selling me birdseed. I told her I had read online that pigeons weren’t welcome at feeders, and I wanted to know why that was. I was concerned because I had started to notice some at my own feeder. She said people want the “prettier” birds like blue jays and cardinals and don’t care much for pigeons and the like. It really irritated me to hear that.
When I saw this squirrel at my feeder, it made me grateful for the God I serve—a God who doesn’t discriminate. Jesus let everyone eat at His table and share in His gifts; He didn’t care how you looked or what horrible things you had done. He didn’t discriminate then, and He doesn’t discriminate now. All are welcome with Jesus. How great is our God!
