The Gift of Eden: Living in Eternity

From the very beginning, mankind was born for eternity. We long for things that are eternal—eternal life, eternal love, eternal relationships. This was one of the beautiful things about Eden; not only was it paradise, but it existed inside of eternity.

He has put eternity in man’s heart. (Ecclesiastes 3:11)

We all crave something eternal, even those who have given up on the possibility of it. Why? Because we were all created for eternity in the image of an eternal God. This is the beauty of your relationship with Jesus; it once again places you inside eternity. I guess you could say, our purpose here on Earth is to prepare ourselves for eternity, for our return to Eden. So how do we do that?

Focus on the One you will be spending eternity with. The idea of “forever” can sometimes scare people a bit. Many people fear Heaven will be boring and loathe the idea of worshipping God day in and day out for all of eternity. People who prioritize their relationship with God don’t have this fear, at least not to the same degree. The afterlife will be nothing but a continuation of our relationship with God here on Earth, a continuation without any worldly distractions or sorrows. The truth is, we can’t comprehend just how wonderful Heaven will truly be, but it’s easier for us to imagine it if we already have a strong connection with God in this life.

Discover what you were created for. We are all unique and have very specific, very unique gifts and roles in eternity. Figure out what God created you for, and use it to bring Him glory. This is what we will be doing in Heaven; we might as well practice now!

Be ready and willing to let go of all things that aren’t eternal. I want to challenge you, the next time you find yourself anxious, sad, bothered, or frustrated, just let it sink in that one day you’re going to be in paradise with Jesus, and none of it will matter! We get so caught up in our future here on Earth, and when it really comes down to it, all that really matters is that we have a future in Heaven!

I hope this inspires you to start living with forever in mind, remembering God has prepared a place for you in eternity.
