The Gift of God’s Love: It’s Close Enough to Touch

Do you ever have one of those moments or maybe even a season where you find yourself begging God to reveal Himself in a bigger way? I’ve found myself recently in one of those seasons. I’ve found myself in a season where I long to be as close to God as humanly possible, and I’m trying my best to make that my absolute priority. I did something recently one Saturday night that I don’t usually do. I turned everything off and tuned into God. God delights in these moments spent with us; it’s in these moments God is close enough to touch. I found myself crying out, begging for His presence, begging for Him to meet me there, and He did. What does it mean for God to meet you where you are? What does that look like? For me it’s a deep sense of peace coupled with things being revealed to me in prayer, words jumping off the pages of my Bible, clarity in my studying and the ability to apply it to what I’m currently experiencing.

I went to bed that night with a deeper understanding and appreciation of my faith; I went to bed enveloped in God’s love, expectant for Him to still be with me when I woke up the next morning, expectant for Him to continue revealing Himself to me throughout my day. If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my walk with Christ, it’s this: when we show up for God, He meets us there. God doesn’t always show up, however, in the ways we imagine. God is creative like that.

In the midst of my expectation, Sassy and I had an unexpected visitor. When I entered my living room that Sunday morning, I saw Sassy face to face with a precious squirrel that had stopped by our window to visit. The thing I immediately noticed about this squirrel was it’s lack of fear. Normally window visitors will flee at the first sight of any motion from the inside, but this little guy stayed with us for a solid 20 minutes as if he had a purpose for being there, as if he were sent there. I walked right up to him and reached out my finger to say hello. The little guy was close enough to touch.

The thing I love about our God is His attention to and consideration of the things we love. This is revelatory of His love for us. If you know anything about me, you know how much I love animals. I love animals because that’s exactly how God created me. I have no doubt that God delighted in spending one on one time with me during a time I usually reserve for something else. And I have no doubt that He sent something, someone for me to delight in, in return. Our God is a creative God, a loving God, a God who knows us fully and delights in our joy, a God whose love is close enough to touch.
