Uncle Carl was less like an Uncle and more like a big brother. I remember as a little girl thinking my godfather was the coolest person in the whole world. He had his own room downstairs at Maw-maw’s house, and he had the whole floor to himself. He listened to the radio down there, and he had pet birds too. He used to play hide and seek with me, and when I would spend the night at Maw-maw’s we would always order pizza. Though Uncle Carl lived with Autism, he was the smartest person I ever knew, and there was no math problem he couldn’t solve.
A couple of weeks ago, Uncle Carl was reunited with Maw-maw for the first time since she passed away 13 years ago. These candlesticks are something I’ll treasure for the rest of my life as they will remind me of a place where I always felt joyful, safe, and absolutely loved—Maw-maw’s house.
To be a candlestick is to know what it means to support the light. It’s the candlestick that holds up the candle, existing in its own beauty yet never trying to be the candle. It simply shows off the candle while helping more light to be seen. The candlestick exists to glorify the candle much like we exist to glorify God.
We live in a world of people who’s pride won’t allow them to just be a candlestick; no, they want to be the candle; they want to be the light. The truth is though, without God we have no light. Without the true Light, we can only become an artificial light, kind of like those flameless candles you see nowadays.
To be a candlestick is to take on a position of humbleness, a position of existing to glorify someone other than ourselves. In a world of flameless candles, never forget the imperishable beauty of a candlestick.
.
To be a candlestick
is to support the light.
It holds up the candle,
existing in its own right.
.
Though not the light,
still it holds beauty.
It’s humble and quiet,
fulfilling its duty.
.
To be a candlestick
is to glorify the candle.
It never takes on
more than it can handle.
.
The candlestick never tries
to steal the candle’s shine;
the candlestick will never
claim to be divine.
.
To be a candlestick
is to stand tall and proud.
It’s beautifully designed
without being loud.
.
The candlestick doesn’t try
to compete for the glory.
The candle is the author
of the candlestick’s story.
.
Without the candle,
the candlestick wouldn’t be.
Without the Lord,
there would be no you and me.
