A follower of my blog recently suggested that I give free verse poetry a try. If you know me, you know I’m not big on change. For several weeks I reluctantly kept repeating the same structure of my poems without giving much thought to trying anything new. There’s nothing wrong with the way I write poems, but it can be fun to change it up now and then. It wasn’t until I saw the first few leaves fall at my feet that I felt inspired to give this free verse poetry a try. It’s not that any season is inherently better than the other, but I’m grateful God created a variety of seasons, grateful He has shown us the beauty in change.
This beauty in change is illustrated by the season of Autumn as the green leaves change before our eyes to shades of deep red and bright gold.
Autumn calls;
the leaf falls
to the ground.
It doesn’t fight
or make a sound.
Change calls;
people run
all around.
They run away
until rest is found.
But rest doesn’t come
from a fight.
Rest comes in surrendering
to the night.
When we answer the calling
we see we aren’t really falling
but moving forward,
floating toward
spring.
