The name hydrangea comes from the Ancient Greek words for ‘water vessel’, ‘hydor’ and ‘angos’. This was chosen as the seed capsules on hydrangeas resemble cups. However, it’s a fitting name in another way—hydrangeas love water, and they tend to be quite thirsty.
We as human beings have a certain likeness to that thirsty flower. We need to consistently water ourselves not just with liquid water but also living water. This living water hydrates our spirit in much the same way physical water hydrates our bodies. I guess you could say we as humans are vessels of living water. This type of water can be found in one place and one place only, in the presence of God.
Today I want to share a few tips to keep your spirit (and your hydrangea flowers) in full bloom.
1. Water more frequently when in full sun.
So often we find ourselves in the full sun of life’s circumstances, and we become spiritually dehydrated. The more we go through, the more we need to spend time in God’s presence as He is our source of true hydration. Just like the hydrangea flower, we need more water when in full sun.
2. Water deeply especially when newly planted.
This is a cardinal rule when planting hydrangeas. Like the hydrangea, we must immerse ourselves in God’s presence when newly submitting our lives over to Him.
3. Ensure adequate drainage.
God will water what is drained, and we must pour out, so He can pour in. It can be tempting to try and hold on to our energy in the heat of the summer. We may even start to isolate in attempt to preserve ourselves, but we are hurting ourselves and robbing others when we do this. Proper draining is crucial for the hydrangea; it’s crucial so the flower doesn’t become over saturated. When we hold on to the Word, our gifts, our purposes without pouring out to others, we too become over saturated. When we aren’t effective in God’s kingdom, we become too focused on things of this world. When we lose sight of what really matters, we slowly begin to drown.

We are a lot more like this flower than we may realize—purposeful yet dependent, beautiful yet fragile. Hydrangeas will never cease to need water, and neither will we. Though eternally dependent, we can rejoice in the truth that God’s water is living and never runs out.
