Preparing my cat’s food is a process, and part of that process involves crushing up supplements and mixing it in with her regular food. In order to crush these supplements, I purchased a pill crusher some time ago. This pill crusher was quite difficult to use, but I assumed it wasn’t the crusher itself but the consistency of her supplement that was the issue. Thus, I continued to use it. One night, the top of the crusher got stuck. Though we never were able to figure why or how, neither myself nor my husband could get it to budge, and he even cut his hand in determination of getting it off. We eventually just let it go and threw it away. Upon looking for other alternatives, we found a cute little mortar and pestle about the size of the pill crusher. We found the mortar and pestle so much easier to use, and the entire process much more efficient and even enjoyable.

I was reminded in this scenario that’s exactly how God works. When He takes something away, we can be tempted to hang on so tightly to it, sometimes so tightly we hurt ourselves in the process of God trying to remove it. But when we finally let go, we see that He was making room for the new thing. It may not happen immediately, but if we just keep seeking God, in time we will see it.

“The New Thing” is inspired by the beauty of surrendering to God’s guidance. The fruits symbolize the parts of our lives we want to hold on to, and the color medley represents the new thing that God has in store. The colors cascading out of the mortar appear as florals, illustrating the beauty that God makes of whatever He replaces. This piece will be hung in our kitchen serving as a reminder to let God make room in our lives for what He has in store.
“The New Thing” will be made to order in my Etsy Shoppe.

A garden of fruits
is a lovely thing.
Even more lovely
is the sustenance they bring.
.
To nourish our bodies,
we must consume.
The beautiful thing is taken
in order to make room.
.
Make room for new fruit,
make room for God’s pour,
make room for the blessings
God has in store.
.
The next time you struggle
letting go of what you knew—
know the beautiful thing isn’t gone;
it’s becoming something new.
