The Gift of Joy: Rediscovering Awe

Do you ever think back to when you were a child and wish you could go back? Why do you think that is? I can answer that for you in one word: joy. Children in their natural state are beings of pure joy. One of the reasons for this is their ability to see the world through new, pure and untainted eyes. They have yet to leave behind their awe.

As we grow older, we forget what it was like to view the world from this lens of complete and total awe. We’ve seen it all before, and we grow tired, weary, or distracted. The problem isn’t that we’ve lost our awe, but rather we have stopped looking for it.

Awe is defined as a feeling of great respect sometimes mixed with fear or shock; the feeling of being in the presence of something vast that transcends our understanding of the world. I want to take that definition one step further and make the claim that awe is not only a feeling but also a realization. See, when we realize just how awesome life is, God is, the feelings have no choice but to follow. Maintaining a state of awe means constantly reminding ourselves of just how much we don’t know. It means constantly humbling ourselves to the wonder and beauty of the world we live in.

What does it mean to be “God-fearing”? As Christians, we are told to fear God. This doesn’t mean we should be afraid of God but instead maintain our awe for how great He is. I’m here to remind you today that our God is an awesome God, and life is so full of wonder and beauty.

I hope you’re inspired to rediscover that childlike sense of wonder we call awe. What’s the most awe-inspiring thing you’ve witnessed lately? A sunset? A star filled sky? A rainbow? For me it was a beautiful little field of wildflowers that brought me joy and taught me everything.
