The Gift of Freedom: Why Caged Birds Still Sing (Part II)

What’s caging you right now? Anxiety, depression, heartbreak, illness, poverty, maybe a failing marriage, or even children?

Freedom is not a physical place or circumstance but rather a state of being we create. It’s part of nature to use our God-given gifts to bring ourselves and those around us joy. We as humans forget this at times and suppress our nature. This may lead one to ask the question—“Why do caged birds still sing?” It’s in using their gift, they are able to experience freedom.

Today I was inspired by these words I wrote in a post on my blog several years back. I wanted to bring to life the bird, free of its cage. The cage is symbolic of the circumstances in our lives we can’t control, and the key in its mouth represents our spiritual gifts—the gifts God placed inside each of us that are connected to our purpose. We each possess the key to freedom whether we realize it or not. When we live to fulfill our purpose, when we live to glorify our Creator, we can know true freedom. I imagine this is what Heaven will be like—using our gifts, without limitations, to glorify God. Our gifts can never be taken away; our purpose can never be taken away. Our freedom is forever.

“Why Caged Birds Still Sing”

The caged bird sings

not for me, not for you.

The caged bird is joyful—

this is true.

.

See the cage only limits

what meets the eye.

When the caged bird sings,

her soul can fly.

.

The caged bird is innocent

but also wise.

The cage cannot imprison the bird

no matter how hard it tries.

.

The caged bird will fulfill her purpose

not for you, not for me.

Her voice is her gift;

her gift is the key.
