The Gift of the Hummingbird: Love Never Ends

It’s almost that time of year again—hummingbird season. I recently felt inspired to put my love for these precious creatures to paper, and I ended up with two very different pieces of artwork.

I love the feeling I get when I see my very first hummingbird of the year. They will usually show up right as I’m starting to think they might not find my feeder that season. Alas, I continue putting the nectar out even though at times I feel a little silly when I find it hasn’t been touched.

If you know me, you know I love birds, especially hummingbirds. I love them so much, I’ll continue putting out food even if I don’t have proof they’ll show up at all. Love will do that. Love will continue showing up even without being certain it’ll ever be returned.

Whenever I see the first little bird show up at my feeder, I always feel God speaking to me. He says, “This is what love is all about.” It’s about showing up faithfully without proof or certainty it will ever be returned. It’s about being willing to be wrong, look foolish, wind up disappointed. Because at the end of the day, it’s who we are; it’s who God created us to be.

“The Gift of the Hummingbird”

We wait patiently for the hummingbird because love is patient. (1 Corinthians 13:4)

We provide nourishment for the one in need because love is kind, and love protects. (1 Corinthians 13:4) and (1 Corinthians 13:7)

We prepare and put out food even when we don’t know if it’ll be wasted because love hopes for all things. (1 Corinthians 13:7)

We continue to put out food all season long even if we don’t see anything because love perseveres. (1 Corinthians 13:7)

I have debated with myself quite a few times about giving up on the hummingbird when it doesn’t show up right away, but something inside just won’t let me—love.

“Love Never Ends”

Three things will last forever—faith, hope, and love, and the greatest of these is love. (1 Corinthians 13:13)

.

Love is patient;

love is kind.

If you don’t return it,

love doesn’t mind.

.

Love is humble;

love doesn’t boast.

Love doesn’t care

who has the most.

.

Love is content;

love chooses peace.

When war arises,

love will increase.

.

Love isn’t a coward;

love will stand up.

Love has boundaries

and fills its own cup.

.

Love has joy.

To the fullest love lives.

If someone hurts love,

love always forgives.

.

Love gives love

to both enemies and friends.

Love is the greatest gift of all;

love never ends.

.

“Love Never Ends” is for those of us who love hummingbirds, gold tones, and have an appreciation for simple lines and abstract forms. The title is illustrated by a seemingly never ending line which forms the hummingbird with heart wings. This pastel painting would look really pretty inside of a gold or pewter frame. “The Gift of the Hummingbird” and “Love Never Ends” are both available for purchase in my Etsy Shoppe and EBay Store.
